The Lonely Brawl and a Lack of Sleep

Smash Bros

Well, my wife and son are off visiting family and so I am temporarily all alone in this cold cruel world. So when I am not at work, I have been playing a new Wii game I picked up, Super Smash Brother’s Brawl. It is a very fast, fun and addictive game, so I haven’t had as much sleep. Today at work both my co-worker (who also has had little sleep) and I were pretty “out of it.” We would both spontaneously start laughing about the stupidest things, but at least we made it through the day. Well, I think I am going to go home and take a nap, after that I may get back to the Brawl. Ah, the joy of sleep deprivation. I feel like a college student again.

Nothing new, but…

Ok, so I haven’t posted in a long, long while — it has been a busy time. For those of you who didn’t know, I am currently working remotely in Utah for Pearson Education, Inc. as an Illustrator, Graphic Artist and Interactive Designer. I have been doing some really fun illustration work (backgrounds, characters, and other visuals) for Poptropica – an interactive game site for kids. Check it out! We are constantly growing this site with more scenes, games, and interactivity — so keep playing!

Well besides work I have been enjoying being a daddy and hanging out with our little boy. It is fun to watch him learn new things…I didn’t realize how exciting it would be to watch someone learn how to crawl.

In my spare, spare time I have been playing some good ole’ games on the Wii’s virtual console – Mario Cart 64, Super Metroid, Ghosts and Goblins (Sega version), and any Zelda game I can get my hands on.

I also been reading some good books/series. The sad thing is that when I get hooked on a series, I end up being stuck waiting for the next book to come out (Harry Potter, The Keys to the Kingdom, etc.). I have recently read the current 3 books in the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series by Rick Riordan. So far this has been a great series, and the way the author combines mythology with our current society is a fun mix. Another fun book I have read is “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” by Jeff Kinney. The comic art in this book is great and the everyday middle school situations the main character deals with are hilarious (some of them remind me of my middle school days).

Well that’s my wild and crazy life so far, if I get a chance to do any more illustrations outside of my job I will try to post them.

Tis’ the Season

Every since I was a wee lad, I remember we had a family tradition of making and decorating gingerbread houses. My mom would begin by rolling, cutting, and then baking the gingerbread (I love the smell of gingerbread). Then she would assemble the houses using hot melted sugar (If it gets on you it leaves a mark, my mom has many battle scars from sugar glue). Next we would begin throwing on frosting and candies galore. After we were finished decorating, we would then take our houses and deliver them to those in need or to family and friends who would enjoy them the most. This tradition has always been one of my favorites. This year my wife and I decided to give it a try, so we made mini-gingerbread houses. I didn’t feel like making the large real gingerbread houses, so we made mini-graham cracker houses instead (sorry mom). We had some friends over and had a fun sticky time. Ah, I love this time of year…tis’ the season. Happy Holidays!

Halloween Pumpkins 2006

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

Every year my wife and I try to carve pumpkins. This last Saturday, we went over to our friend’s house and had a fun time carving pumpkins, drinking cider through licorice straws (Red Vine), and watching Garfield’s Halloween. Here are the fruits (or squash) of our labors…

Blocks still rock…and so does 4-wheeling!

I haven’t had time to play with blocks lately…until today. I decided to show the world that I still enjoy playing with blocks. The topic for Illustration Friday is “play,” so maybe I’ll illustrate myself playing with blocks…hummm….by jingo, it may just work?!

My family had a mini reunion this last weekend and was able to spend time with my 3 nieces who live in Kansas. They are between 3-8yrs old. On their drive back home my sister asked them what their favorite part of the trips was, and they said going 4-wheeling with Uncle Nathan…yep, I am cooooool!
